When a female Guardian dog comes into heat, we ask that you contact us immediately. At that time, we will need access to her for any breeding related appointments. Once she has been bred, she will stay with you until approximately one week before her due date. She will then return to Spur Strap to have her litter and will come home once her puppies are fully weaned, around six weeks of age. Guardians are always welcome and encouraged to visit by appointment while their dog is here.
Each dog is individually evaluated to determine how many litters she will have. Most of our females will have between one and three litters to preserve strong genetics and maintain their health and well being. Females are first bred after two years of age.
Guardian Program Policies
You also get to experience the joy of being part of our breeding program. It is incredibly rewarding to see the offspring of your own dog placed with loving families across the country, bringing them the same happiness and companionship you enjoy every day.
To be considered for the Guardian Program, you must live within 200 miles of our home in Damascus, Oregon. You must have secure physical fencing, own your home, and maintain a schedule that allows your dog not to be left alone for long periods. Dogs should never be kept in outdoor kennels for extended time. Guardians must have reliable transportation and be willing to bring their dog to us as needed for breeding purposes.
Pet parents in our Guardian Program play an important role in helping us continue the Spur Strap legacy of raising exceptional Miniature Australian Shepherds. As a Guardian, you are responsible for the routine veterinary care and overall wellness of your dog. This includes annual vaccines, grooming, monthly heartworm prevention, deworming, training, regular exercise and socialization, along with feeding foods, supplements, and treats from Nutrition For Paws. The Guardian provides day to day care, just as any responsible pet parent would.
Guardians are not responsible for any costs related to breeding. All breeding expenses are covered entirely by Spur Strap Mini Aussies.
The benefits of this program are significant. You receive one of the very best dogs Spur Strap Mini Aussies has to offer. Breeding stock is chosen based on exceptional quality that aligns with our breed standard. Another great benefit is that your dog will be fully health tested by 24 months of age at no cost to you.
After all health testing results are received, Spur Strap will determine whether the dog will enter our breeding program. If for any reason we decide not to breed your dog, you will receive written permission to spay or neuter your companion.
